Birth Classes in Arlington, TX

We are so excited to introduce a new instructor to you, Caren Nugent. Caren teaches birth classes in Fort Worth and Arlington,  Texas, is a mom of two and loved her natural births. We are so grateful to have her join us. Her passion for birth is contagious and you will love being in her class!

First, could you introduce yourself? Tell us a little bit about your own birth experiences and how they influenced your desire to teach birth classes.

My name is Caren Nugent. I’m a wife and mother of 2 (Aaron is 5 and Sara is 3). I am a doula and a certified Birth Boot Camp Instructor. I had two very successful, out of hospital births. My son was born at a birth center and my daughter was born at home. After having my son, I knew I needed to be somewhere in the birth realm of things. I love instilling passion into new moms and taking control of their births. It seemed, to me, that the best way to do that was to teach; where people were paying to hear me talk about my passion, therefore, they were more inclined to listen.

What first got you interested in the realm of birth?

After my first birth, I had a lot of breastfeeding issues. I was introduced to two local breastfeeding groups, La Leche League of Arlington and For Babies’ Sake. From there, I met with a lot of like-minded women who were just as passionate about natural birth and breastfeeding. I knew I needed to be in that world. I love the flexibility of teaching classes and I love being in front of a group of people talking about all things birth.

What are your particular passions concerning birth?

I LOVE first time moms. There is something so sweet and innocent about them that make them such a joy to be around. They are usually fairly new to anything birth related and are more likely to do a lot of research. With research comes knowledge. With knowledge comes confidence. Confidence brings about a totally different birth experience.

Caren, working with a client. Our instructors love teaching their couples how to find physical and emotional comfort during labor.

Because of my own issues with breastfeeding, I want to help every single mother that has a desire to nurse to be able to reach her personal goals. I exclusively pumped for 13 months with my son and it was the hardest things I ever did. But because of the challenges I faced during those times (tongue and lip tie, sensory issues, craniosacral issues, chiropractic issues, staph and yeast infections), I feel like I have the compassion and empathy to help overwhelmed moms persevere through. I believe every mom can breastfeed if they have the desire and support.

There are lots of different childbirth educator training programs out there. Why did you choose Birth Boot Camp?

I chose Birth Boot Camp because it was the most comprehensive program out there. I had been an avid reader of Banned From Baby Showers and Mama Birth for years and so I was able to kind of watch Birth Boot Camp come to what it is now. From the people that I knew who had taken Birth Boot Camp, they all loved it so much. So when I knew I wanted to teach, Birth Boot Camp was the most obvious choice.

Tell us a little about your Birth Boot Camp training experience. Where did you train? What did you like about it?

Caren, front row in the pink, obviously loved her Birth Boot Camp childbirth educator training!

I attended my training in Dallas, Texas. I was a little star struck when I knew Sarah Clark was going to be one of the trainers. Like I said, I had been an avid reader of her blog, Mama Birth. I found the preparation to be very in depth and the training to be entertaining. I walked away feeling extremely confident in my knowledge and felt I was ready to jump right in.

To close, tell us how you see childbirth education having a positive impact? Why does this work matter to you?

I live in the DFW area. It is saturated with birth centers, midwives, chiropractors, childbirth educators and doulas. I think it is become more “trendy” to have a natural birth, but that’s exciting too. I’m hoping for a new generation of passionate natural birthers!

Caren, with a doula client.

There is something so internally rewarding about being able to push a baby out without any use of pain medications. All births are pretty incredible, and I can only speak for myself and my experience, but there is nothing like a natural birth high. I felt very prepared for my births, but I don’t think anyone can actually be THAT prepared. It’s totally scary and exciting and liberating all at once. I wish words could describe how I feel, but there aren’t any.
