Getting To Know Birth Boot Camp HQ - Cheryl Amelang

Hi! I’m Cheryl Amelang, mama to 6 kiddos, coffee lover, birth nerd, and childbirth educator! I had planned home births with wonderful midwives. My first baby was born on a chilly spring evening. I went into labor in the morning and he was born by bedtime. It was the most wonderful experience. I held my new little person and couldn’t believe I had done it! His birth changed how I viewed myself, what I knew I was capable of, and the power I had/have inside of me. My next two births were very similar. I woke up in the morning in labor and they were both born before lunchtime! My third was my first nighttime birth. She was born around 3:00 am, my first girl and a little secret that happened in the middle of the night with no one to know until the sun rose. My fifth birth was my most difficult birth. His birth was very mentally challenging for me. I would do it again and again to have him in my arms, but I’m so glad I don’t have to! I wouldn’t say I had a traumatic birth, but it was a very hard birth and one I had to spend time processing. So when I was pregnant with my last baby, I did a lot of work to prepare mentally and build a birth team that would be able to support me the way I needed. And boy did I succeed! Her birth was amazing and dreamy in every way possible. I know it was because of the work I put into it and the birth team I built. Birth is so powerful and can be a wonderful, lovely experience. Everyone deserves to experience that.

What first got you interested in birth work?

I had zero interest in birth until my first baby was born. My experience was so powerful, loving, and intimate that I wanted all women to feel how I felt during my birth. It took several years before I became a birth professional and I’m so grateful for the women and community I get to be part of and continue to serve with and learn from.

Do you have any particular passions concerning birth?

My passion lies in women and birthing people knowing the power they have to make choices that are right for them, believing in their ability to do this really big, beautiful thing, and building a team that will support them along the way.

Why did you choose Birth Boot Camp as your certifying organization?

I chose Birth Boot Camp when I saw our materials for the first time. The curriculum is so comprehensive, up-to-date, and covers everything I am passionate about new parents knowing about birth, baby, and breastfeeding. I love that the materials are easy to teach from, everything is included as a childbirth educator, and the community is just the best out there. I really love Birth Boot Camp and the difference we get to make in the lives of families.

Tell us a little about your Birth Boot Camp training experience- what did you like about it, where was it, who was your trainer?

My trainers were the original creators of Birth Boot Camp, Donna Ryan and Sarah Clark in 2014. Training has changed over the years but I loved being in that birth bubble talking and learning about birth and how to run a birth business. The women in my training were so amazing and from all over the country. It was fun to hang out and get to know others who are just as passionate as I am.

Tell us about your classes and what you most love about teaching:

I have been teaching birth classes for 12 years now and I love it more each class I teach. I originally wanted to be a doula but I had little kids at the time and thought that teaching would be a fun thing to do until I could certify as a doula. I never anticipated how much I would LOVE teaching. Watching their confidence grow as the weeks go by, it nothing short of magic. I am so grateful to be a small part of someone’s big birth story.

How did your training help prepare you for teaching?

We went through each class, practiced all of the teaching tools, learned comfort measures, relaxations, etc. It was a very hands-on training, which I love. I felt very prepared to teach Birth Boot Camp classes after training.

Tell us about your students and how classes are helping them.

Classes give both partners the tools they need for birth. After each class has their babies, we usually have a reunion and each couple can tell their birth stories. It’s always so great to hear how they knew how to navigate their birth experience. They knew their options, how to help themselves, and how they got from point A to point B. Even when the birth doesn’t go how they planned, they still feel like they were the driving force in decision making process and that can often be the difference between a traumatic experience and a powerful one.

What do you do for Birth Boot Camp HQ?

I joined the Headquarters Team in December of 2019 as the administrator and now currently in the role of Certification Coordinator. My job is to help upcoming childbirth educators, birth doulas, and postpartum doulas work through the training and certification process. I get to walk alongside trainees from the moment they sign up, to completing the certification, and throughout their Birth Boot Camp career. Giving birth is life changing and being a part of a birth story is magical. Watching amazing women go out into the world and make a positive impact in the lives of so many families is something that never gets old.
