Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your birth experiences.
I'm a humble nurse-turned-SAHM with a caring husband and four crazy children. Our oldest daughter was adopted and our next three were homegrown. We laugh a lot, make plenty of messes, and enjoy learning together.
With my first pregnancy, I had a new friend who had piqued my interest in natural birth after sharing with me her several very different birth experiences. With my first pregnancy, I called her for advice- her first tip was choosing a supportive care provider, and she passed along her midwife's contacts.
My fabulous midwife has seen my family through three wonderful pregnancies and natural births. With each pregnancy and delivery (and postpartum period), I've learned more and more about our amazing bodies, nutrition and exercise, balancing my life as a wife and mama, and have led my family a little further on our path to better health.
I took Birth Boot Camp online with my first pregnancy and had my first AMAZING birth; I swore to myself then that I'd eventually teach the class, because if I could do it, anyone could. I finally certified as an instructor at thirty-six weeks pregnant with our fourth child.
What first got you interested in birth work?
I'm a former RN who became intrigued with birth during nursing school. I was fascinated by what I saw and was caught totally off-guard when I witnessed my first birth and cried like a baby.
I thought it was beautiful, miraculous, and incredibly life-affirming.
Several years later, after having adopted our first child, my husband and I began doing crazy research into natural birth... four years later, here I am!
Do you have any particular passions concerning birth?
I love answering first time mamas' questions. I want to affirm you in your desire for a natural birth, and I want to give you the tools you need to succeed!
Why did you choose Birth Boot Camp as your certifying organization?
I loved this class from the first time I took it. It was fun, it was incredibly informative, and I loved that it was so much more than a one-size-fits-all method. There is SO much good stuff in here, and it can be used and tailored to fit so many situations.
Tell us a little about your Birth Boot Camp training experience.
I trained in Dallas with Donna and Sarah, and though I was so nervous about travelling so far from my family at thirty-six weeks pregnant, I felt pretty amazing being with so many passionate birth workers (it didn't hurt that there were plenty of caring women who wanted to give me back rubs and hip squeezes while I was there!). The training was comprehensive, and I felt overwhelmed-- in a good way!-- about the amount of information I was taking home.
How did your training help prepare you for teaching?
My training was incredible. I loved meeting other women who were so passionate about natural birth- birth professionals, women with varying birth experiences (epidurals/cesarean sections, VBAC, water births, hospital and home births, birth centers, surrogate mothers), women who had experienced pregnancy loss, and more.
I'm excited to pass along education to women around me and can empathise with a variety of situations.
