Preparing for Pregnancy

Hi I’m Rachel,

As a functional medicine health coach who has been through my own hormone journey with birth control, I have learned probably way too much about fertility, ovulation, and hormones given I haven’t even had kids yet!

I’m passionate about helping women achieve pregnancy, have easy periods, and be able to live their life with energy and confidence without having to worry about their health.

Here’s what I’ll cover in this blog:

  1. Coming off of birth control + PBCS

  2. Tips on preparing for pregnancy

  3. “Trimester Zero”

If you’re considering starting a family, one of the first steps is to plan your timeline for coming off birth control… hint: give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.

My Journey Coming Off Birth Control

Coming off birth control is honestly a unique experience for everyone. It was truly AWFUL for me because I had no idea the Post-Birth Control Syndrome (PBCS) was a thing and I went completely cold turkey.

PBCS is a set of symptoms that usually come up 1-6 months after stopping the use of hormonal birth control and can last for upwards of a year. This often occurs due to the changes in hormones associated with stopping synthetic hormones.

Basically, it is your body’s reaction after stopping HBC because it changes the amount of progesterone, testosterone, estrogen, and/or other hormones that are circulating.

The most common symptoms include:

  • Acne, cystic acne, rosacea
  • Amenorrhea (loss of menstruation)
  • Depression, Anxiety, and other mood symptoms
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Hair loss
  • Headaches
  • Heavy, painful periods
  • Gas or bloating
  • Gut dysbiosis

Tips for prevention of PBCS:

– Replenish nutrients (HBC often causes deficiencies)

– Heal your gut (figure out the root cause)

– Identify hormone imbalances*

– Support natural detoxification pathways

*Note: If you are interested in comprehensive hormone testing please visit my website for details. I offered the Dutch Complete testing which includes a full report

Here’s a general timeline based on what type of HBC you’re on:

  1. Hormonal Birth Control Pills, Patches, and Rings: It’s common for cycles return to normal within a few weeks to a couple of months after stopping hormonal birth control however for some women it can take 3-6months. Ovulation can resume as early as the first month. If it’s been 6 month please see your doctor for evaluation!
  2. Hormonal IUDs (Intrauterine Devices): Ovulation generally returns quickly after removal, often within the first cycle. Some women may experience a slight delay, but most can conceive within a few months post-removal… however! I recommend spending at least 2-3 months focusing on detoxification before trying to conceive.
  3. Non-Hormonal IUDs: Ovulation often returns immediately since non-hormonal IUDs do not interfere with your hormonal balance… however! Inflammation that can be caused by the IUD may impact your bodies ability to ovulate right away.
  4. Injectable Birth Control (Depo-Provera): This method can take the longest to leave your system, with an average of 6 to 12 months for fertility to return.

I recommend you plan ahead and stop injections well in advance of when you hope to conceive to allow your body ample time to return to its natural cycle.

Preparing for Pregnancy: Fertility Tips

Once you’ve decided to come off birth control, here are some fertility tips based on my professional experience:

1. Track Your Menstrual Cycle

Why: Understanding your cycle helps you identify your fertile window

How: Use apps or fertility tracking methods like basal body temperature and cervical mucus monitoring… I use the TCOYF method of Fertility Awareness Method!

2. Exercise Regularly

Why: Regular physical activity can improve overall health and reduce stress, which is beneficial for fertility.

How: Aim for moderate exercise like walking, swimming, or yoga.

3. Manage Stress

Why: High stress levels can negatively impact ovulation and fertility.

How: Incorporate relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness into your daily routine.

4. Avoid Harmful Substances

Why: Smoking, excessive alcohol, and drugs can impair fertility and harm a developing fetus.

How: Eliminate or reduce these substances from your lifestyle as you prepare for pregnancy.

5. Get Regular Medical Check-Ups

Why: Ensuring your body is healthy and ready for pregnancy is crucial.

How: Schedule a preconception check-up with your healthcare provider to discuss your plans and address any health concerns.

So what is “Trimester Zero?”

You’ve heard of the 3 trimesters of pregnancy but have you heard of trimester zero??

Trimester zero is the time before conception when you’re likely preparing your body for pregnancy. Here’s some things to consider during this important phase:

  1. Preconception Health Check

  • Address any underlying health issues and discuss any concerns about fertility and pregnancy.
  1. Start Prenatal Vitamins

  • Well before pregnancy begin taking prenatal vitamins, especially folic acid. Folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects in the early stages of pregnancy.
  1. Detoxify Your Environment

  • Minimize exposure to environmental toxins. Chemicals in certain household products, cosmetics, and foods can affect fertility and fetal development. Choose natural or organic products, avoid BPA and phthalates, and eat organic when possible.
  1. Maintain a Healthy Weight

  • Aim for a healthy body weight through balanced diet and exercise. Being underweight or overweight can drastically affect hormonal balance and ovulation.
  1. Emotional and Mental Preparation

  • Prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for the journey ahead. Mental and emotional well-being is crucial for a healthy pregnancy. Practice self-care, communicate with your partner, and seek support when needed.

Coming off birth control and preparing for pregnancy can be an exciting journey and by understanding the timeline for your body you can enhance your fertility and set the stage for a healthy pregnancy. Remember, every woman’s body is different, so be patient and consult with your healthcare provider throughout the process.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, journey!
