World Breastfeeding Week 2025 - Prioritize Breastfeeding

Every year, from August 1 to 7, people around the world come together to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. This global initiative, led by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) in partnership with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, focuses on the importance of breastfeeding for the health of babies, parents, and communities.

The theme for 2025 is “Prioritize breastfeeding – Create sustainable support systems.” It highlights a critical connection between breastfeeding and the environment that many of us might not have thought much about before.

Breastfeeding is a natural, renewable source of nutrition. It requires no packaging, no transportation, and no manufacturing so it is gentle on the planet. Unlike formula feeding, which involves factories, plastic bottles, cans, and shipping, breastfeeding leaves a much smaller environmental footprint.

Supporting breastfeeding is more than a personal choice. It is part of a bigger picture, helping reduce the environmental impact linked to infant feeding worldwide.

That said, breastfeeding does not always come easily, and parents often face challenges that can make it difficult to continue. That is why the campaign emphasizes the need to build sustainable support systems. Consistent, ongoing support that families can count on.

The 2025 campaign highlights four key objectives:

Inform — Help everyone understand their role in creating environments that support breastfeeding and protect the planet.

Anchor — Provide continuous support that stays with parents through all stages of their breastfeeding journey.

Engage — Bring together healthcare providers, birth professionals, workplaces, and communities to build strong, connected networks.

Galvanize — Encourage action that strengthens breastfeeding support and promotes sustainability.
