Black Maternal Health Week - Resources

As we observe Black Maternal Health Week, it’s essential to recognize the disparities and challenges faced by Black mothers and families during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. April 11th to 17th serves as a reminder of the urgent need for change within the healthcare system to ensure equitable care for all birthing individuals, regardless of race or ethnicity.

Understanding Racial Disparities

In the United States, there’s a significant gap in maternal health outcomes between Black and white women. According to the CDC (source), the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women in 2021 was 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is 2.6 times higher than for non-Hispanic White women. This means Black women face much higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth.

To add to the concern, CDC (source) data shows that Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Shockingly, over 80% of these deaths could have been prevented. These statistics highlight the urgent need for action to address the systemic inequalities in maternal healthcare.

Educating Ourselves on Black Maternal Health

To address these disparities and work towards a more equitable future, it’s crucial for individuals to educate themselves on the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly Black Mamas and families. One way to do this is by exploring various resources that provide insights into the experiences of Black Mamas within the healthcare system.

Resources for Learning and Action

To support our commitment to advancing maternal health equity, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help deepen understanding and inspire action during Black Maternal Health Week:
