5 Conversations Before Labor Every Couple Should Have

Before labor starts, there’s a lot to think about—and even more to talk about. Having meaningful conversations before labor helps you and your partner feel more prepared, connected, and ready to face whatever comes your way. These chats don’t have to be complicated, but they can make a huge difference when the big day arrives.

Here are 5 important conversations before labor that every couple should have.

1. What kind of birth experience do we want?

This is where you dream a little. How do you picture your baby’s birth going? Are you hoping for an unmedicated birth, open to an epidural, or still figuring it out? Do you want a doula there with you? Would a midwife’s care feel more in line with your goals? These conversations help you build your support team and make sure you both understand what matters most to each other. Just remember—plans can change, and that’s okay. The goal is to go in feeling informed, supported, and like you’re both in it together.

2. What role do you want me to play during labor?

Birth partners, this one’s for you. Do you want to be hands-on with comfort measures? Be in charge of drinks and snacks? Just be the steady, reassuring presence right by their side? Talk about it ahead of time so you’re not guessing when things get intense. Partners who know what’s helpful ahead of time are able to show up in a way that really matters.

3. How will we handle unexpected changes?

Even with the best planning, sometimes birth throws a curveball. What’s most important to you if things don’t go the way you hoped? Maybe it’s making sure you feel heard with every decision. Maybe it’s being reminded that you’re strong, even when things feel hard. Talk about how you want to handle surprises now, so you’re both ready to face whatever comes.

4. What Does Your Ideal Birth Look Like?

Creating a birth plan means having honest conversations about what matters most to you. Do you want to labor at home as long as possible? Are you planning for pain management or hoping to go unmedicated? What are your preferences for mobility, monitoring, or pushing positions? Talking through these details helps your partner know exactly how to support you.

If you’re not sure where to start, our Birth Plan Blueprint is designed to guide you step-by-step. It helps you create a birth plan that truly reflects your wishes and gives your birth team a clear idea of how to support you best. Working on it together before labor begins will make a big difference.

5. How are we going to handle postpartum together?

Don’t skip this one. Newborn life is beautiful, but it’s also exhausting and emotional. Talk about who’s doing what—diaper changes, feedings, meals, laundry. And don’t be afraid to bring in extra help. A postpartum doula can help ease that transition and give you both a little breathing room. The goal isn’t to do it all perfectly—it’s to make sure neither of you feels like you’re carrying the load alone.
