Please give a warm welcome to Beth Hake! Beth is one of our newest instructors and teaches birth classes in Wichita, Kansas.
Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your birth experiences.
Hey there! I'm Beth, a wife to one, mother to two, birth doula, and Birth Boot Camp Instructor. We live in the beautiful state of Kansas in the small-town-big-city of Wichita. True to my INFJ personality, I am insightful, determined, and always finding a way to help others.
When I became pregnant five years ago, my husband and I knew we wanted to have a home birth if the baby and I stayed low risk. Because we had a community of friends around us that had home births with a midwife, we had already done our research and knew the benefits and risks of our choice. I stayed low risk and my water broke to start my labor. This first home birth was an incredible experience for me.
Everything progressed fairly normally and I had our son about 12 hours later. It wasn't perfect, there were some interventions, but overall I felt empowered and inspired. Two and a half years later I had another home birth that was seamless. I attribute my wonderful, enjoyable labors to taking care of myself prenatally (nutrition, sleep, staying active), being educated (I became a doula in between my first and second births), and completely trusting in my ability to birth my babies.
What first got you interested in birth work?
Hearing my mother's stories of her unmedicated births after having a Cesarean is what piqued my curiosity about birth. I was always very intrigued with how a woman could go through this (apparently) horrible, worse-than-anything, pain.
What did labor feel like?
Why did some women find it not too bad and others swear they would never do it again?
After I had my first child, I realized that much of the "success" or "failure" of a woman's birth experience had to do with how educated and supported she was before, during, and after her birth. I had a much more pleasant experience because I was mentally and emotionally prepared for what was to come. I believe that all women should have the opportunity to learn about how their body works and have someone at their birth who is a compassionate, wise, and nurturing birth expert.
Do you have any particular passions concerning birth?
The more births I attend the more I realize that anyone and everyone can have an amazing birth! Having an amazing, empowering birth has nothing to do with the circumstances we have no control over, but it has everything to do with what she knows, how the mother feels, and how she is treated.
Why did you choose Birth Boot Camp as your certifying organization?
I chose to certify with Birth Boot Camp after researching all of the other childbirth education organizations and realizing that none even come close to everything you get with Birth Boot Camp!
Birth Boot Camp encompasses every aspect of pregnancy, labor, and birth a woman needs to stay low risk. When a woman is low risk, she has options and the best chance of having an amazing birth. Birth Boot Camp helps and prepares instructors to be successful by having an evidence based curriculum that changes when new research emerges.
I don't have to seek out all of the research and then try to include it in my classes. They do that for me so I am a better, more accurate teacher. I also chose Birth Boot Camp because of their emphasis on being proactive and prepared. Empowerment comes from having a full understanding of one's options and then choosing what is best for them. That only comes with diligent preparation.
Tell us a little about your Birth Boot Camp training experience- what did you like about it, where was it, who was your trainer?
I trained in Dallas, Texas with Sarah Clark and Donna Ryan. It was fantastic! I made life-long friends and learned everything I need to be a successful teacher. During the training, you are able to fully immerse into the curriculum so that you are prepared to teach each one of the ten classes. They also give you valuable business training.
My favorite aspect by far was being surrounded by other women who have the same passion as me and feeling connected and encouraged to go home and begin teaching Birth Boot Camp.
