Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your birth experiences.
Hi! I'm Bethany and I am a birth doula, a RN, and a Childbirth Educator. I live in Boulder county, CO with my sweet husband, my two wonderful kids, and my blue heeler. My firstborn was a un-medicated birth at home after almost 24 hours of labor. He was born perfectly however I had a retained placenta and had to be transferred to the hospital after birth. My second was born into my hands in the water at the Birth Center in Boulder. Both were incredible experiences that have shaped me forever.
What first got you interested in birth work?
I have always been interested in pregnancy and birth. I can remember as a kid being fascinated by the birth process and loving new babies. Throughout nursing school I considered L&D but felt that it just wasn't the right fit for me. I was honored to have a birth doula at my first birth and realized that being with, supporting, and educating women is my passion in life.
Do you have any particular passions concerning birth?
Natural birth and helping couples make informed decisions are topics that I feel passionate about!
Why did you choose Birth Boot Camp as your certifying organization?
It is the most comprehensive childbirth curriculum I could find. I stumbled upon it as a first time mom and took it online with my husband three years ago- I knew from personal experience that it prepared us!
Tell us a little about your Birth Boot Camp training experience- what did you like about it, where was it, who was your trainer?
I had the privilege of training as a birth teacher with Jennifer Valencia in Denver CO. It was so awesome to meet women from all over the country who were all as passionate about birth as I am. Not only did I learn so much, I gained some amazing friends in the process.
My classes are set to begin in January 2017. (If you are reading this after January 2017, check out Bethany's website for a current class listing.)
How did your training help prepare you for teaching?
Training gave me the space to hear new ideas, try new things, and gain a network of support as we journey through teaching.
